The Role of the Epidermal Barrier in the Development of Skin Irritation and Sensitization

    The intact epidermal barrier accomplishes a competent defense against potential irritants and allergens originating from the surrounding environment. Skin barrier impairment facilitates the penetration of exogenous agents and thus plays an important role in the development of skin irritation and sensitization. In this review we discuss the role of epidermal barrier disruption for the development of skin irritation and contact allergy.
