HELP THE BULGARIAN NURSES IN LYBIA

The subject of physicians – killers is not a new story. Human history is abundant with examples of physicians being falsely accused of poisoning kings, royalties, successors to the throne and their younger and elderly brothers. I would like to recall a trial of the so called “Conspiracy of the white coats”, organized by Lavrentiy Beria in January 1953, which still has millions of witnesses alive today. Only the death of Stalin in March 1953 hinders a “legitimate people’s court of law” to pronounce the death sentence on nine nine people…

The scenario of such trials is also notoriously well-known in Bulgaria between 1946 and 1950:

“confessions in front of a legitimate people’s court of law”, enraged crowd, thundering “death”,

“fair” death sentence”. But now we are in 21 st century.

It is in our human nature to try to understand the suffering of the HIV infected children and hopeless despair of their parents. Each nation is sensitive regarding the fate of its children. The Lybian trial presented I white and black colors only gives our compatriots the martyr’s aureole. Perfect and sinless people do not exist. It is possible that the conduct of some have violated the regulations in an Islamic country and disturbed the public concept regarding female manners. However, that cannot be stated as a reason for judicial proceedings. The accusation of infecting 400 children deliberately with the incurable for the time being AIDS lacks mind, logic and evidence. This statement is absurd and preposterous. Everyone acquainted with the mechanisms of HIV transmission and especially we as dermato-venerologist will confirm that this is impossible. The court failed to listen to the conclusions declared by the world-famous experts, who discovered the HIV virus – professor Luc Montanie and professor Colicci.

Now everyone is asking the question: what should be done? In my opinion, relying on Bulgarian politicians is no more realistic. They did their best and no one should be angry with them. They represent a small country with no significant authority, burdened with heavy past. Turning tragedy in a TV show would also not contribute to the liberation awaited by all Bulgarians.

The major steps should be directed to the global community. No big efforts are needed to explain to the professionals, humanitarian, non-governmental and youth organizations that this is a political trial, acting as a coolind device of the high political tension in Bengazi. Nowadays people are sensitive on the subject of terrorism and terrorists. And this sentence is a terroristic act against five innocent women and mothers, representatives of a small and suffering nation, terrorism against knowledge, consistency and connexity of scientific thought, terrorism against universal views on objective and fair court.

The physicians around the globe can help mostly since they are the right people to understand the absurd decision of the Lybian court.

No too long ago the French minister of cultural affairs and outstanding intellectual Andre

Malraux has declared that “if the 21 st century is despiritualized, then the mankind is finished.”

Let us seek the support of people from different countries to help our compatriots. That would be a gesture of spirituality, which the world needs.

Let us give this world an opportunity to become “spiritual”, even for a short period of time and postpone the advance of the Apocalypse.

Please, help the Bulgarian nurses with your moral support and solidarity!

TRIAL OF MEDICAL & NURSING COLLEAGUES IN LIBYA

The President and members of the Executive Committee of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology wish to express their utmost solidarity with their Bulgarian and Palestinian colleagues who are currently under sentence of death in Libya.

EADV joins international medical and nursing organizations world wide including the World Medical Association and International Council of Nurses in condemning this manifestly unjust verdict which was given in the face of highly significant scientific evidence (below) in favour of the defendants. EADV urges the Libyan authorities to review this decision in the name of justice. Individuals and national societies are urged to take up the WMA suggestion

Sir

‘Justice for Imprisoned Health Professionals’

The President and Officers of the British Association of Dermatologists urge the Libyan authorities to rescind the death sentence and release the five Bulgarian nurses and Palestinian doctor accused of deliberately infecting Libyan children with HIV.

The doctor and nurses have been imprisoned since 1999, but now scientific evidence has shown that the HIV subtype involved began infecting patients in Libya well before the medical workers arrived in 1998. These findings cast doubt on the evidence against the accused health professionals. We ask the authorities to review the cases in the light of this independent evidence and to treat these healthcare workers with humanity, compassion and, above all, justice.
